YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Members of the Youngstown Jewish community came together on Sunday to remember those who died during the Holocaust.
The ceremony’s keynote speaker was Lauren Bairnsfather, director of the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh. In her speech, she talked about the shootings at the Tree of Life temple and what she believes can stop such hate crimes.
“Trying to educate, to inspire people to stand up for what they know is right, to speak up when they hear hate speech,” Bairnsfather said. “And that’s what I want people to know. When you see something that’s wrong, speak up. We can stop this before it happens.”
Bairnsfather said that even months later, the city is still healing from the shooting.
