An officer with the state prison in Mercer remains in the hospital after he apparently was exposed to some form of opioid in an inmate’s cell.
Grove City Hospital — including the ER — was shut down for two hours Monday for decontamination.
Six employees, including a jail physician, of the State Correctional Institution in Mercer were brought there after coming in contact with a suspicious substance.
On Monday, the unnamed officer was searching through the belongings of an inmate who had been moved into the prison’s Restricted Housing Unit for disciplinary reasons.
Officials believe the officer came into contact with some type of substance because the officer was found unresponsive and had to be given the overdose-reversing drug, naloxone.
All of the other employees have been released.
For now, the prison remains on lockdown.
The Pennsylvania State Police, along with the State Correctional Institution and Department of Corrections security staff, is investigating.
The hospital has since reopened.
