HOWLAND, Ohio (WKBN) — A Howland boy in the fight of his life had “the best day ever” on his first day back to school.

All of Howland Glen Elementary School lined the halls on Monday, holding crepe paper for 8-year-old Grady Oprean’s first day back.

Grady was diagnosed with leukemia last April. He hasn’t been able to physically be at school while undergoing treatment.

His mom, Angela, said this warm welcome was a complete surprise for Grady. He even told her he didn’t know days could be this good.

“It just warmed my heart,” she said. “I mean, I was so happy and relieved because of all the stress and all the hardships that he’s been through, he could actually enjoy that special day and that took away so much of that heartache that he had felt.”

Grady is a year into his three-and-a-half-year treatment. He takes daily chemo and antibiotics, and does most of his schooling from home.

His mom said he’s the strongest little boy she’s ever met.
