Horizon Science Academy students learn new skills with gardening project

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Students with one inner-city Youngstown charter school will soon get some hands-on experience with gardening.

Raised growing beds were recently installed behind Horizon Science Academy on Southern Boulevard.

Two teachers with the school, who have their own home gardens, came up with the idea of a garden club to serve as a year-round learning tool for the students.

“It would be a great opportunity for them — especially in Youngstown — to actually work with the soil, work with their hands, learn agricultural skills, learn building skills,” Sara Polomski said. “It’s kind of like a trade. We’re starting them off early so that they can be successful in the near future.”

Recent donations made the work so far possible.

Teachers said they’ll continue reaching out for more supplies, such as potting soil and plants, hoping to have their first harvest late this summer.
