The summer months are usually vacation time for most teens, but one local college student is spending her time off witnessing democracy first hand.

WKBN Washington correspondent Alexis Scott caught up with her to hear about her experience.

Juliet Long is a communications intern at the United States Capitol in the office of Pennsylvania Congressman Mike Kelly.

“My favorite things to do is give a Capitol tour. I really love public speaking, so hands-on experience again is one of the many things I love about this internship,” Long said.

She will spend the summer internship working with representative Kelly and his constituents

“Every day is different… that’s one of the fun things about interning here on Capitol Hill. We start our day at 9 a.m., and it’s different for in-session weeks and out-of-session weeks,” Long said.

But that’s not all. After making sure all the voters are taken care of, she moves on to school matters.

Long is a senior at Grove City College studying for a communications degree.

“I always look for a place that aligns with my values but also challenges me. I think that one of the best ways that someone can grow is to be challenged,” Long said.

This Wolverine works from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. most days all while conducting research for her senior thesis.

“I either want to look at different personalities in the workplace and how they should blend, the layout of the office, or something related to media and how that influences voters,” she said.

“I’ve noticed that what is on the news equals what our constituents are going to call and either complain about or tell us that they like something,” Long said.

She says being on the Hill and sporting her school name is an accomplishment. After she’s finished, she’ll return to Grove City College to complete her degree and enter the workforce in the field of international communications.
