Group wants to reclaim ‘Black Monday’ from Youngstown’s legacy

Local News

City leaders, students, and others gathered at Youngstown City Hall Wednesday to reclaim the Black Monday date.

Black Monday is a term coined to describe the decline of the steel industry in the Valley that began in the late 1970s and continued into the mid-80s.

The group that gathered at City Hall want to stop harping on the negatives of the era, and leaders want to start a new movement that creates pride within the city.

“We want to reclaim corridors for the city. We want to start telling the narrative a bit differently, whether it be on billboards or advertisements,” said Derrick McDowell, event organizer.

Youngstown Mayor Tito Brown, Youngstown Police Chief Robin Lees and Youngstown Schools CEO Krish Mohip were some of the city leaders attending.
