Proceeds go to help raise money for fighting fires

GREEN TWP., Ohio (WKBN) – The Green Township Fire Department held its annual breakfast pancake and sausage breakfast fundraiser on Saturday.

Proceeds pay for items like protective gear to keep firefighters safe.

“We kind of supplement our budget by raising our own money,” said Green Township Fire Chief Todd Baird.

This year’s breakfast was set up differently than in the past because of COVID-19, but pandemic changes aren’t the only switch-ups at this station.

“We were volunteer since 1943, and we recently changed to where they’re getting paid per call for training,” Chief Baird said.

They’re changing the way their volunteer program works to help recruit more firefighters, like Hannah Koran who has been a firefighter and EMT for more than three years.

She’s one of the few women at the Green Township Fire Station, but she said she doesn’t feel like the odd woman out.

“Everybody has always made me feel right at home and never made gender an issue, so I was very excited for them to throw me into fire school and not think anything of it,” said Koran.

She had advice for anyone thinking about becoming a volunteer who might be hesitant.

“Just don’t be afraid of it. It doesn’t matter how big you are or how strong you are. It’s all about technique,” she said.

All of the local fire stations we have talked to say they are always looking for volunteers and say to give them a ring on the phone if you feel the calling to help your community.

The Green Township breakfast raised over $3,000. They say it’s one of their most successful yet.
