Glacier baseball team serves community at Rescue Mission

Local News

A group of local youth baseball players spent their Sunday giving back to members of the community.

The Glacier baseball team took part in Glacier Day at the Mission, preparing meals for people at the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley with food donated by local businesses and community members.

“We need to really know and understand the community that we live in,” said coach Bill Sloan. “This 14 and under team, they’re at a point now they need to learn a lot of life stuff.”

Sloan believes the service day teaches his players about life in ways that sports cannot.

“Never look down on people because some people are born into this situation. They never get the chance that other people have,” said player Richard Palumbo.

Giving back to the community is not new to the team. Projects like this show the players a different side of life. but it also shows compassion from the youth.

“Younger people, they do care about other people. That’s why we’re here today,” Palumbo said.

Palumbo said what they do is all an effort to change lives.

“You’re helping out people and maybe they learn from that and maybe they get a job and maybe they can come up from the ground from that,” he said.
