(WKBN) – Former WKBN radio news director John Nagy has passed away at the age of 71.

WKBN talked to Nagy in 2018 while he was recovering from his battle with sarcoma, a tumor that occurs in the soft tissues.

That cancer returned in October.

Nagy had a 40-year career in local radio before retiring in 2009. He called the experience of being on the radio a humbling experience.

A couple of former reporters talked about working with Nagy.

“He was the last of the radio news guys who had it all up here. He had all the phone numbers memorized. He had a Rolodex. He could call people to dig into a story and find an interview, find the answers he needed to write the story. He was so organized; he was so fun. He was a great guy to work with and learn news from,” said Tricia Perry.

“He was so good. He was so devoted. He loved his family. He loved riding his bike, and he loved the Mahoning Valley,” said Gina Marinelli.
