The last time we heard of Alex Zordich he was playing quarterback at the University of Buffalo, having just won a state championship at Cardinal Mooney. Now he’s traded his football for pizza dough and will soon have his own restaurant inside Youngstown’s new downtown hotel.
Through a small door at the far end of Youngstown’s B&O train station, Alex Zordich operated his test kitchen in preparation for his move to the new DoubleTree Hotel downtown.
“We were hoping to be in the hotel a couple months ago, but you know how that goes, and understood, there’s a lot of work,” Zordich said. “So I started looking around where I could do some work in a commercial kitchen, maybe get a stand, this ended up being the perfect situation.”
Zodich is calling his new restaurant Yosteria.
Right now it’s open only Thursday through Satruday and is limited to pizza, sandwiches, and the occasional pasta dish, most of which is take out.
After football he went to California, then spent two years in Italy, and it’s what he learned there that will be part of Yosteria at the DoubleTree.
“Region by region it’s so different. They talk different, they act different, and they definitely cook different. I was fortunate enough to learn from a lot of those regions and that’s what I want to bring back here,” Zordich said.
The Zordichs are one of the First Families of Youngstown area football. Alex’s father Mike played in the NFL, while his brother also named Mike played for Penn State.
“The whole football things, it’s such a great thing. The pride, and besides the football, just the pride in this town, the pride in the people have in this town, that’s what brought me back here,” Zordich said.
The only advertising Zordich is doing right now is on social media — Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. That’s where you can find the phone number if you’d like to order something from Yosteria.
He plans to be in the new DoubleTree downtown by August.
