MASURY, Ohio (WKBN) – Two firefighters are recovering after being injured while fighting a fire in Masury, and a family has to find a new place to stay for the time being.

It happened just before midnight Tuesday in the 7800 block on Oak Street.

Multiple departments had to be called in to help fight the fire: Sharon Fire Department, Hubbard Fire Department, Vienna Fire Department, as well as the Burghill Vernon Chief as an Incident Safety Officer.

About 20 firefighters from Brookfield, Sharon, Vienna, Burghill, Vernon and the Eagle Joint Fire District responded.

When they arrived, they saw smoke coming from the edge of the roof.

Firefighters said there was fire damage on the outside and water damage on the outside. Firefighters saw moderate smoke on the second floor and an overhaul was needed to locate the smoldering fire. Crews were on scene for about 2 1/2 hours.

The family and their two dogs made it out safely.

“We made an aggressive interior attack and we were able to hold the fire to pretty much the area of origin there was extensive smoke and water damage throughout the house,” says Brookfield Fire Chief David Masirovits.

Two firefighters were injured after falling. A Brookfield firefighter was treated at the scene for minor heat-related illness. According to Sharon Fire Chief Bib Ficus, a Sharon firefighter broke his upper right arm when he fell inside the home. He was released from the hospital Wednesday morning.

Masirovits says one of the children discovered the flames.

“He could smell smoke, told his parents that he smelled smoke, or his dad, and then when he went back upstairs, came back down and said, ‘Dad, upstairs is full of smoke.’ So they got everyone out of the house,” says Masirovits.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
