NEWTON TWP., Ohio (WKBN) – Fire investigators in Trumbull County say an overnight house fire in Newton Township is suspicious.

Crews were called just before 11 p.m. Tuesday to Woodland Street. When they got there, flames were showing from the windows and roof. Donna Dunn lives one street over and could see the fire through the woods.

“When it was still in flames and everything, you’d hear a popping every once in a while,” Dunn said.

The home was completely destroyed by the fire.

Chief Douglas Theobald says it is suspicious. The home was vacant and there were no utilities connected to it.

“There’s no reason that it would have caught fire,” Theobald said.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office was called in to help with the investigation.

“The fire is considered suspicious right now, although we have no persons of interest at this time,” Theobald said.

Theobald says one firefighter was taken to the hospital to be treated for a head and knee injury. He was hurt while crews responded to a rekindle at the home Wednesday morning.
