Fight over lottery ticket ends in assault charge in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A Youngstown man is facing charges after police say he got into a fight with a woman over a scratch-off lottery ticket. 

According to a police report, officers were called about 2 a.m. Friday to a house on the 1700 block of Sillman Street on reports of a fight. 

When officers arrived, a woman said that Derrick Berry, 43, became angry with her over a scratch-off lottery ticket and the argument got physical. 

The woman said Berry grabbed her by the head and ripped out her braids. Police noted they found two long braids laying on the floor and the woman’s head was injured. They also noted that the house was a “complete mess” and that there were liquor bottles strewn about. 

Two small children were lying on the couch and within reach of the alcohol, the report stated. 

Berry was arrested and charged with assault. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment is due back in court on May 16.
