“Feeling I’m just in a bad dream and I just need to wake up,” said Christian Ramos, hours after learning his niece Crystal Hernandez had been murdered.
Ramos tells us he’s angry and wanting answers.
“She was a great mother,” he said. “She was a good girl. You know, she was young. She had a great heart.”
The 24-year-old mother of a young boy was found shot to death Thursday night inside an apartment on McBride Street around 9:30.
As the frigid evening was shattered with the sounds of gunfire, calls started flooding into 911 from all around the east side.
CALLER: There’s a whole shoot-out out here man. You need to hurry up and come on man.
CALLER: It was a whole bunch of gunshots that just went off…Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop.
CALLER: I’m gonna just be honest, it sounded like an AK-47.
CALLER: It’s like fifteen to thirty shots.
Officers recovered more than forty shell casings from outside the apartment building.
Detectives were back on the scene Friday morning looking for anything they might not have seen in the dark.
What appears to be a bullet hole in the window frame can be seen in the daylight. As investigators chase down leads and tips, they still can’t say how the shooting unfolded and whether anyone or anything else was hit.
In the meantime, Ramos is still waiting to learn how and why his niece had to die.
“People dying left and right for stupidity. This gotta stop. This has to stop.,” Ramos said.
