Eight defendants in shooting of Youngstown mom appear in court

Local News

All of the suspects charged with murder in connection to the shooting death of a Youngstown mom are being held without bond.

Burton McGee, Martize Daniels, Larenz Rhodes, Maurice Redrick, Marquis Torres and Joquan Blair are all charged with aggravated murder, murder and conspiracy.

Gabriel Smith and Lavontae Perry, who are charged with felonious assault for the events that happened prior to the shooting of Crystal Hernandez, are each being held on $50,000 bonds.

Hernandez was hit by gunfire when shots were fired into her east side apartment. Her two-year-old son, who was also in the apartment, was not harmed.

Police said six defendants came to the apartment looking for Hernandez’s boyfriend, Gabriel Smith.

Youngstown’s law director said Smith was engaged in some sort of robbery or drug-dealing that led up to the incident. He said Smith and Perry also shot at the other suspects prior to the shooting of Hernandez.

The eight suspects appeared in Mahoning County Court of Common Pleas on Tuesday morning.

Their trials were set for April 22.
