Police said the beagle disappeared from a backyard Friday night and its body was found on Sunday

EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (WKBN) – East Palestine police are investigating a report of animal cruelty. It started as a missing dog case but turned into a much bigger one.

Police said a woman’s beagle, Trouble, disappeared from her E. North Avenue backyard over the weekend and only part of the pet’s body was returned.

Police said the owner told them the dog went missing Friday. On Sunday, her son called to tell them someone had killed the dog, cut off its head and left it in the backyard.

“The police department is taking this very seriously,” said Mark McTrustry, East Palestine Village manager. “We will be doing all that we can to make this incident go away as soon as possible and to protect our citizens and the pets.”

Police think it happened on Friday between 8 and 9:30 p.m., and Sunday between 1 a.m. and 1 p.m.
