City leaders in East Liverpool hope the medical marijuana industry will flourish and bring new economic growth to the city.
FRX Health opened a new dispensary Thursday at 1865 Dresden Avenue.
The State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy Wednesday awarded a Dispensary Certificate of Operation to FRX Health. The dispensary is only the sixth licensed by the state so far.
Danny Scott was there for the grand opening. He says medical marijuana changed his life. Scott suffers from PTSD. He was driving three hours to Michigan to fill his prescription. Now, he’s registered with the state and can go to the new dispensary in East Liverpool.
“I’m so glad to be off those pills. They had me on high doses of Xanax. When I found out about the medical marijuana card I said can I switch that for the pills? The doctor said, yeah no problem,” Scott said.
The marijuana made Scott a lot better. He said he can go out in public and it helps him calm down.
Medical marijuana can also help people with chronic pain avoid opiate medication, which could help fight the opioid and heroin crisis across the country.
“While cannabis isn’t a silver bullet for anything, it can actually be very helpful for many people who are suffering from opioid dependency,” said FRX Health CEO Rebecca Myers.
Myers celebrated her new business with a fist pump and cheer. Scott was her first patient in the door.
A lot of buildings in downtown East Liverpool are vacant and many storefronts are empty. That is why Mayor Ryan Stovall says he’s glad to see the medical marijuana dispensary coming in.
“We got a lot of making up to do. We’ve lost a lot of the pottery industry and the steel industry, which were our staples,” Stovall said.
Stovall estimates FRX will do $100 million a year in business. That would mean $1.5 million for the city.
Dispensary hours will be Monday – Saturday from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon until 7 p.m.
The company is headquartered in Farrell, Pennsylvania where work is underway to open a cultivation and processing facility.
There are two other local medical marijuana dispensaries in Ohio.
Green Leaf Medical in Warren contacted us this week and told us they will have their Grand Opening March 1.
Quest Wellness Ohio in Youngstown is another location, but an opening date has not yet been set.
