EAST LACKAWANNOCK TWP., Pa. (WKBN) – Mercer County Coroner John Libonati identified the woman killed in a crash in East Lackawannock Township on Tuesday morning.

The victim, 73-year-old Mary Byler, was riding in an Amish buggy that was hit by a vehicle traveling along the same roadway. Byler was pronounced dead at the scene at 9 a.m.

Another passenger in the buggy was flown to the hospital with injuries from the crash, and the horse was euthanized.

The crash happened in the 1100 block of Mercer New Wilmington Road, just down the road from the township building.

Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

District Attorney Pete Acker said the decision on whether to file criminal charges will come after police finish their investigation.

He noted that it was the second fatal crash involving an Amish buggy this year, and later that morning, there was another crash involving an Amish buggy in which no one was injured. That crash happened north of Mercer.

He urged drivers to use caution when traveling on roads frequented by Amish buggies. Those roads often have warning signs along the roadways.
