Democrats hope monthly meetings will inform Trumbull Co. voters before primary

NILES, Ohio (WKBN) — The May primary is less than a month away and on Thursday night, Trumbull County Democrats gathered to get voters ready.

They hope having monthly “Hot Topics” meetings will energize area Democrats and make all voters aware of local issues affecting them.

“Your school issues, your city issues, your taxes for your roads and your levies. It’s all about the voters locally and what’s important this year,” said Janet Carson, chair of the Geauga County Democratic Party.

Carson has been politically active since the ’60s. She was the keynote speaker Thursday, not just because of her tenure with politics but because of the fact that she has been organizing these meetings in her home county for the past three years.

“It’s a great way to energize voters and engage the community about issues that are important to them. Not necessarily Democratic issues, but issues that are important to the community,” she said.

Carson said it’s a great way to get people informed with the May primary just a few weeks away.

“We try to do these Hot Topics, we try to do a lot of emails, letters to the editor, community interaction. We want to make sure the voters know that there is an election going on in May and that there is another one going on in November.”

Hot Topics meetings will be hosted on the second Thursday of every month at the Trumbull County Democratic Headquarters in Niles’ Pinetree Plaza on Youngstown Warren Road.
