(WKBN) — Police and fire crews have identified a person who drove into the Shenango River.

Daniel A. Carr Jr., 38, of Sharon, was pronounced dead at 5:46 p.m. by Mercer County Deputy Coroner Mike Renner.

He was found at the Shenango Reservoir Mahaney Boat Launch in South Pymatuning Township in Mercer County.

The cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation following aquatic submersion, or drowning, and was ruled accidental.

South Pymatuning Police Chief Paul Ferm said an officer spotted a vehicle with taillights that were out driving down Kelly Road. The officer got behind the vehicle, but it continued driving into the river.

Ferm said the officer got out and tried to pull the man out of the submerged vehicle, but the officer was unable to pull him out.

Crews searched the area near the Mahaney Access Boat Ramp early Saturday morning. That search was called off at 3 a.m. but resumed around 7:30 a.m.

Ferm said they did find the man’s car.

The Patagonia Fire, South Pymatuning Police and Fire and Beaver Falls Fire departments are on scene, as well as the Hermitage Water Task Force.
