Fiery wrong-way crash on I-680 in Youngstown leaves 1 person hurt

Police said the driver was going north in the southbound lanes Wednesday night

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Youngstown Police are looking into a crash last night that shutdown a portion of Interstate 680 in the city.

Youngstown police said it happened around 8:30 p.m. near South Avenue.

The vehicle crashed head-on into another car after traveling for several miles in the wrong direction on the freeway.

The cars collided near the Market Street exit.

Police had been looking for the wrong-way driver after getting dozens of calls from other motorists and then a call from a person the driver hit.

Dispatcher: 911 where is your emergency?
Caller: I’m on, I’m on 680 and..
Dispatcher: A car going the wrong way
Caller: Yeah, and they hit me. They hit me, and they kept going
Dispatcher: OK ma’am, can you pull over?
Caller: I’m on the side of the road
Dispatcher: Are you out of danger?
Caller: I’m on the side of the road
Dispatcher: Anybody injured?
Caller: I don’t know. I have three kids in the car

Police say an officer on the scene had to pull the driver out of his burning car after suffering leg injuries in the crash.

No one else was badly hurt.

So far, no charges have been filed.
