NEW CASTLE, Pa. (WKBN) – A house in New Castle was boarded up following a tragedy that took place Sunday afternoon.
Around 2 p.m., the New Castle Fire Department was called to the 1700 block of Gretchen Avenue for a reported house fire where someone may have been trapped inside.
New Castle Assitant Fire Chief Michael Kobbe said the victim was Betty Yachym. Officials believe she was in her nineties.
Kobbe said the back part of the house was covered in flames when crews arrived.
Several people tried to save Yachym.
“There were bystanders attempting to make entry to the house but it was too much heat, too many flames, too much smoke. So they couldn’t get into the residence,” Kobbe said.
After firefighters put out the flames, they found Yachym. From there, the Lawrence County Coroner was called to the house.
Yachym was pronounced dead at the scene and the house heavily damaged.
“The kitchen was completely destroyed by fire and the rest of the house suffered severe heat and smoke damage,” Kobbe said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
An autopsy is being done to find out exactly how Yachym died.
