A local culinary student at Choffin Career and Technical Center in Youngstown getting some much-needed help with his vision.
Andriel Martinez was born with a severe vision impairment. He is a junior at Chaney High School, studying culinary arts at Choffin.
He requires any text to be enlarged to a 60-point font to be able to read.
Choffin’s instructors worked with Andriel to provide him support, but he needed more help.
So, the Lions Club, United Way and the Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities coordinated to purchase him high-tech glasses.
The glasses cost about $4,200.
“What the glasses do, anything on text or on a piece of paper or text on the screen, it takes a tiny picture of it and reads it out loud to him,” said Melissa Ustik, Youngstown City School District’s district-related services supervisor.
Andriel is only one of 24 people in the state that has these OrCam glasses.
