GIRARD, Ohio (WKBN) -A man accused of crashing his car in Girard after fleeing police Thursday morning is now facing charges.
Tyler Welsh is charged with several traffic and criminal offenses, including failure to comply and weapons while intoxicated.
Welsh is accused of taking off from Liberty Police just after 2 a.m. and driving recklessly at a high rate of speed.
According to a police report, Welsh entered Girard and ended up hitting a mailbox, a bush and tree on Verona Avenue.
Girard firefighters ended up having to cut branches in order to get Welsh out of the car.
Officers say he made comments about harming himself and appeared to be under the influence.
“Fortunately, he did not cost anyone their lives, and there was no accident other than himself involved in this,” said Liberty Township Police Chief Toby Meloro.
Welsh was taken to the hospital for treatment.
According to a police report, investigators found a loaded handgun inside the vehicle.
