BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Owners of Boardman’s Wagon Wheel Motel have made some repairs to the building, but we won’t know until Friday morning if it was enough to keep it open.
On Thursday evening, there was a hole in the roof of the motel on Market Street that had been covered with some type of material. An electric company came out as well.
Earlier Thursday, the motel’s owner and the Boardman Fire Department reached a deal to have the repairs made within 24 hours or the motel would be closed.
Fire Chief Mark Pitzer said the motel will be inspected at 8 a.m. Friday.
“My personal opinion is they have a very tall order to try to achieve before tomorrow morning,” he said.
Fire Safety Inspector Lt. William Ferrando reported he found structural issues during an inspection on March 28. By May 3, the fire department determined the issues had not been addressed and the building continues to deteriorate.
“We got evidence that wires and wiring components have been exposed to the elements and it’s all stemming from the roof being damaged,” Ferrando said.
On May 13, Boardman trustees voted to begin the process of closing and eventually demolishing Wagon Wheel Motel.
