American Red Cross disaster relief, emergency response vehicle

As Hurricane Florence takes aim at the Carolina coast, a number of volunteers with our local Red Cross chapter are in the storm zone — and more are on the way.

Tuesday afternoon, volunteers left in an “Emergency Response Vehicle” for Akron, where they will “stage” until there’s a better idea of where and when the storm will hit.

The truck will be used to help distribute meals to residents displaced by the hurricane, as well as emergency responders in the area.

Local directors are urging people who want to help to make monetary donations for disaster relief.

“They’re able to utilize those to get those resources in place that are needed,” said Kristen Gallagher, with the Red Cross. “As the storm hits, as people start arriving at the shelters and they see what those needs are, that’s when those dollars are able to get those resources and get them to the people that need them.”

Two other volunteers left for Wilmington, North Carolina on Monday to make preparations for storm-related help.
