The giant online distribution business Amazon is bringing a small piece of its empire to the Mahoning Valley.
The Youngstown-Warren Regional Chamber confirmed Wednesday that Amazon has leased a small space at the Youngstown Commerce Park in North Jackson.
The 43,000-square-foot facility is expected to be used as a distribution/warehouse facility.
Sarah Boyarko, COO for the Chamber, said they were aware that Amazon was shopping property locally and are glad it landed in the Valley.
“We are glad they’ve finalized their property search with the selection of the building in North Jackon,” Boyarko said. “We will remain engaged and work to support their business needs as they begin their hiring process.”
Roughly three dozen members of the Building Trades have been working in and out of building for a number of weeks, getting it ready. Officials with the township say they were asked about expanding the parking area of the warehouse but never told why or who was involved.
The job-search website, Indeed.com, lists four job classifications for the local project with information suggesting at least some of the positions will pay between $12 and $15 an hour, but we still don’t know how many could be hired or when this new facility will actually open.
