Adult went back into burning trailer in Mercer County to save child, fire officials say

Two adults were able to get out through a window but one of them went back in to save a 4-year-old child

FINDLEY TWP., Pa. (WKBN) – A Mercer County mobile home caught fire early Wednesday morning, sending two people to the hospital.

Around 2 a.m., a mobile home on Clintonville Road in Findley Township caught fire with three people sleeping inside.

“My daughter’s still in her nightgown and I gave Chad some clothes that I had here that would fit him so he had something to wear,” said David Nelson.

Nelson’s daughter owns the mobile home, where she lives with her boyfriend.

“The adult male was able to come to the far end to open up the doorway to holler in for the child,” said East End Fire Chief Bill Finley, Jr.

A 4-year-old child she was babysitting was sleeping on the other end of the home.

“The child did not answer. He had the fortitude to go to the bedroom window, take out the window and feel the child in the bed, and he was able to pull the child to safety through the window from the bed,” Finley said.

Once they got out, they ran across the street to where Nelson lives.

Both Nelson’s daughter and the child were injured. He said his daughter cut her leg escaping from a window and was also treated for smoke inhalation.

“They loaded them both into the ambulance and took them to Grove City initially,” Nelson said.

A relative of the 4-year-old child called our newsroom Wednesday afternoon, saying the child is now in the ICU at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh but is in stable condition.

“We want to try and go through the trailer to see what we can save,” Nelson said.

But, Nelson said all that matters is that everyone inside made it out.

“All we can do is try to pick up the pieces,” he said.

The home is a total loss and investigators still don’t know what caused the fire.
