911 caller: ‘It went pow, pow, pow, pow, pow’ during Youngstown shooting

Local News

Three people called into 911 on Thursday night as gunfire rang out near the Victory Estates apartments on Youngstown’s east side.

Twenty-four-year-old Crystal Hernandez was hit by the gunfire and killed, according to family members. She was inside an apartment at the time.

Police haven’t verified that Hernandez is the victim but said they arrived to find a woman dead from a gunshot wound.

Several shell casings were found in the area.

One caller told a dispatcher that she heard multiple shots as her husband was leaving for work.

“It went pow, pow, pow, pow, pow — a whole bunch of gunshots,” she said.

Another caller reported seeing a group of people shooting at one another before running away. He urged the dispatcher for her to quickly send the police.

A third caller told another dispatcher that shootings have happened near the Victory Estates apartments in the past. He said it sounded like the shooter was using an AK-47.

Police are investigating and haven’t released any details about what led to the shooting and who was involved.
