BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Police are investigating after an 8-year-old boy was shot in the hand.
Boardman Police Chief Todd Werth said the boy was shot at an apartment on Shields Road.
Police were made aware of the shooting at about 8 a.m. Monday after the boy showed up at St. Elizabeth Hospital with a gunshot wound to his hand.
Werth said the shooting was reported as accidental.
The boy’s mother told investigators that she owns a 9mm handgun that she purchased at a gun show. She said she stores it in the living room closet.
She said her son got the gun and was playing with it when he inadvertently fired a shot, grazing his thumb and index finger, according to the report.
The woman told police she was sleeping at the time.
The incident is under investigation.
