(WKBN) – U.S. News and World Report reviewed 23,000 public schools in all 50 states and some local schools got great scores on its 2019 Best High Schools ranking.
The list ranks Canfield at #41, Poland at #51, Springfield at #52, Boardman at #54 and Howland at #98 in Ohio. The schools also ranked nationally.
The AP Calculus class at Boardman is working on fast-response questions. They’re preparing for the upcoming AP tests.
Boardman has made a push to add AP classes, which just so happened to be a big part of these rankings.
“That’s been a focus for us. Not to get accolades, but because we know it’s the right thing for our kids,” Principal Cindy Fernback said.
This year, Boardman has 24 students with perfect grade point averages for all four years and who took advanced curriculum.
The school made the rankings for the third straight year.
“No matter how much the community may change, how much society has changed, we will always go back to that tradition of excellence,” Fernback said.
Canfield is the top-rated school locally. Its key to success has been understanding where students are and tailoring instruction to them.
“We try to meet each individual youngster’s needs to drive them at their ability level to the next level,” Superintendent Alex Geordan said.
Of the local schools ranked among the top 100 in Ohio, four are in Mahoning County and one is in Trumbull County.
“I think it is a testament to a lot of hard work from a lot of people,” said Howland High School Principal Joe Simko. “It’s always positive to see our hardworking staff and students get recognized with such a great honor.”
In western Pennsylvania, Reynolds, Shenango and Neshannock schools made the state’s top 100. The goal of these schools is preparing students for their futures so they can be successful.
They all said it’s a team effort.
“We have wonderful families that send youngsters to us on a daily basis that are ready to learn. We drive them even harder and that is a key,” Geordan said.
The best high school in the state of Ohio is Walnut Hills in Cincinnati, according to the ranking.
The ranking lists the best high school in the nation as Academic Magnet High School in North Charleston, South Carolina.
The rankings were compiled by using data on college readiness, participation and performance on AP and IB tests, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rate.
All of the data was compiled by U.S. News and World Report from the most recent state report card.
