Two of the 136 proposals from 35 states expressing interest in becoming the new homes for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture are in Trumbull County.
One of those proposals came from the Cafaro Company for their Enterprise Park site. It’s located near the Eastwood Mall Complex.
Spokesman Joe Bell says the company is moving in the direction of diversifying the types of developments it does and this particular land would be an easy fit for the USDA.
The company has also proposed a site in Fredericksburg, Virginia too.
“We do have eligible land that looks like it might be a good place for these particular divisions of the USDA to set up shop,” Bell said.
The Western Reserve Port Authority is also one of the applicants.
The USDA plans to choose a new location by January 2019.
In August, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced most of the ERS and NIFA personnel would be moving out of Washington, D.C. by the end of next year.
