A new, generous donation to Youngstown State University focuses on its economics department.

The daughters of the late Mahoning Valley businessman Paul J. Thomas donated $1.5 million to help establish a full-time professor position in economics.

The gift is part of the “We See Tomorrow” fundraising campaign.

“I think it contributes to their student success. The students already have a strong sense of mentoring and professional development through our expert faculty. They often have opportunities to do internships, both regionally and nationally, and we feel like bringing in the Paul J. Thomas endowed chair in economics will strengthen that opportunity,” said Kristine Blair, dean of YSU’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.

The “We See Tomorrow” campaign is the largest in the university’s history and has already surpassed the $75 million mark.
