JobsNow started two years ago as a partnership between WKBN and the Youngstown-Warren Regional Chamber.
Now, the Regional Chamber is looking for an events manager. Mary Beth Wyko holds the position now but is leaving.
Her job is to put on 100 events each year — from small lunches to networking opportunities like mixers, and even large events like the annual Salute to Business event.
“You have to be able to multi-task and work from one event to the next at a moment’s notice,” she said.
Kim Calvert, vice president of marketing and special events at the Regional Chamber, said you shouldn’t think of it as a party planning position. Events are geared toward what businesspeople want — from networking to educational opportunities.
“You do want someone who is full of energy, creativity, someone who can juggle a lot at one time because we have so many events. You are literally planning months-worth of at one time,” she said.
The position requires great customer service relationship with vendors and Chamber members.
“You need to be able to present a friendly face to people who are attending Chamber events. You also need to have a cool head under pressure,” Wyko said. “When you come to a Chamber event, you don’t see work that goes on behind scenes, and we don’t want you to see that work.”
The events manager and staff put together educational events and networking opportunities as well as the annual Athena Awards and Chamber breakfasts.
The ideal candidate would have at least a bachelor’s degree.
“There’s so much planning and coordination that has to go into them that they really are a large part of what we do, so they are crucial; they really are,” Calvert said.
