NEW CASTLE, Pa. (WKBN) - A family company in New Castle recently added a second shift and it's looking for more employees.
Berner International was the first company to make air curtains in the United States. Air curtains (air doors) shoot a stream of air which splits at the floor. It's an environmental separator to keep warm air away from cold air.
You can find some of their air doors at Giant Eagle, Wendy's and Walmart, just to name a few.
Berner needs workers who make 15 to 20 different types of the curtains. Some are even heated units.
“We're looking to bring somebody in with some raw talent, some mechanical ability, and we'll train them on building an air curtain. It's kind of hard to go out and find somebody that knows how to build an air curtain. We'll train them on that as long as they have a little mechanical ability,” said Joe Miller, plant manager.
Doug Seeger has been working at Berner for 22 years. He's in the commercial assembly department making air curtains that are built from the frame up.
“You need mechanical skills. You need to read wiring diagrams, blueprint reading, but the main part is good mechanical skills, good hands,” Seeger said.
Berner would like to find workers with manufacturing experience. They train heavily in-house and have a state of the art laser cutter to help workers.
The company is looking for second-shift workers who want to work in shipping to ensure the air curtains are packed the correct way and sent to the right place. Most importantly, the Berner wants workers who can exceed their cultural values.
“We are kind of picky who we bring on. Once you get inside, there is not a lot of turnover. We joke that the only way out of here is through retirement,” Miller said. “We have some 40 to 45-year employees that have retired here. We must be doing something right if people want to stick around that long.”
Berner is also looking for an Inside Sales Associate, Design Engineer, and Production Supervisor.
The company also offers a benefits package you have to hear about to believe.
Job seekers can apply in person at 111 Progress Ave., New Castle. Applications can be downloaded online. Anyone with questions can call (724) 658-3551.
