Autonomous cars may be the future, but you can’t drive very far right now without seeing a sign that says “drivers wanted.”
Currently, there’s a need for people to get behind the wheel and drive.
Public transportation started in New Castle in the mid-1800s with the Electric Streetcar Company. Rides were a nickel.
The first bus was introduced in the 1930s.
Today, the New Castle Area Transit Authority has 32 buses and is hiring drivers.
“The best thing is anybody with experience who has a little bit of road miles behind them,” said New Castle Transit Safety Director Mark Courson.
Transit buses have wheels behind the driver, which makes an easy transition for school bus drivers who are used to tighter turns than, say, a tractor-trailer driver.
Drivers must have a CDL license with a class A or B endorsement.
Courson drove for 19 years and knows the job has rewards.
“Really just dealing with the people. The reward: we’re paid very fairly here, they’re really good jobs,” he said.
The buses run nearly 20 routes every day around New Castle, the region and even the everyday routes to Pittsburgh and back.
New drivers will learn all of them and become an extra board driver.
“Extra board drivers are runs that go out that we consider trippers, which are seven hours or less, so they can run anything. Then, if we have people who call off sick they will jump in that person’s run for the day,” Courson said.
All of the drivers are full-time — there are no part-time drivers for the New Castle Area Transit Authority.
Every driver’s safety record is checked.
The transit would like to find more drivers with passenger experience, but knows there are some things that you just cannot teach.
“We look for conscientious people who want to come to work, who want to do a good job, who have customer service orientation,” said New Castle Transit General Manager David Richards.
Applying is easy, just fill out an application at the New Castle Area Transit Authority, located at 311 Mahoning Ave., New Castle, PA 16102. Their number is 724 654-3130.
Take your CDL license and other necessary paperwork when you go to fill it out.
