JobsNOW: Army trains you for more than combat when it comes to local job opportunities

A career in the military is not just preparing to fight in case of war. Today’s military involves training for many more areas and even training for jobs that can keep you in the region.

The United States Army lets you take control of your future, with plenty of opportunities for people ages 17 to 35.

“The Army has over 150 jobs and we provide training and work experience in every single one of them,” said Capt. Danny Duarte, company commander.

The Army is really trying to find workers for local jobs, which are harder to recruit for than combat jobs.

“What we’re really trying to get people to come out [for] is our admin jobs, our truck drivers, our finance people,” Duarte said.

Those are just some of the areas.

Cyber careers have become popular — detecting, identifying and responding to attacks against friendly networks.

With Army Reserve units in Farrell, New Castle, Twinsburg, Pittsburgh and even North Canton, open jobs also include unmanned aerial vehicles.

“We actually need UAV operators for people who are qualified, we’re in short demand. For people who are qualified, we’re also looking for helicopter pilots. We have a program that trains people on that and we’re really short,” Duarte said.

The Army also needs officer candidates if you’re a graduate of Youngstown State University, Kent State University or another local school.

Most commitments are two to five years.

For active duty, you are placed at a post working your Army job.

The reserves, you get trained then come back to the local area.

“Last I checked we had about 700 openings in 14 job areas in all those units combined, so there’s plenty of opportunities for the people who are interested,” Duarte said.

The Army also has educational benefits that can help pay for college.
