YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – If you were out driving in the rain on Thursday, you may have been breaking the law and didn’t even know it.

Ohio law says when windshield wipers are in use, your headlights must be on.

Brian Vail, with the Ohio State Highway Patrol in Canfield, said troopers are always out looking for violators.

“It is a primary violation, meaning if they see someone without their headlights on, and it’s raining, they are looking for the violation,” he said,

Vail said it’s a minor misdemeanor, but one that could come with a price of around $80 to $100 for a violation. He said the law was put in place to ensure safety on the roadways.

“If’s definitely safety-related when it comes to that. Maybe the effect that people can see in their rearview mirror more. That there’s a car behind them or the taillights of seeing the car in front,” he said.

Those with motorcycles with windshield wipers must also follow the same rules.
