CINCINNATI (AP) – Former president George W. Bush plans a campaign stop in Ohio later this summer on behalf of incumbent GOP U.S. senator Rob Portman.

Corry Bliss, a Portman spokesman, confirmed Monday the visit by Bush on Aug. 2 to a private fundraiser at Cincinnati’s Great American Ball Park.

Portman faces Democrat Ted Strickland, a former Ohio governor and congressman, in November.

Bush twice carried Ohio, including in 2004 when he clinched his re-election with a narrow victory in the state.

Portman served as Bush’s White House budget chief and U.S. trade representative.

Strickland campaign spokesman David Bergstein said the visit will remind voters of the how damaging Bush and Portman’s policies were for Ohio’s working families.
