Youngstown crime activity: Homicides and robbery add to string of violence

Tuesday, April 2

11:30 p.m. – 2000 block of South Ave., officers were called to the area after a robbery attempt at the Petra Mart where two employees were shot. Both victims were taken to the hospital. Police are searching for suspects. 

Wednesday, April 3

Tyrell Avenue, felonious assault. Police say JoEllen Paris shot her boyfriend in the leg after she learned that he cheated on her. Police found spent shell casings on the living floor and blood near where the victim had been lying. A handgun was found between the mattress and box spring where Paris’s young child was sleeping, according to a police report. 

Thursday, April 4

7:41 a.m. – W. Princeton Avenue, police were called to the area on reports of a man lying at the end of a driveway with a gunshot wound. The caller told police that he saw 42-year-old Darrell McCary in the driveway after kids getting on the school bus were standing around him. McCary told police that he had been shot at the corner of W. Princeton and Hillman Street and said he had been lying in the driveway for about six to eight hours, according to a police report. He did not know who shot him. 

Saturday, April 6

11:15 p.m. – 200 block of Pasadena Ave., officers were called to the area where they found a man shot to death inside a vehicle. The Youngstown Police Department and the Mahoning County Coroner are investigating. 

11:25 a.m. – Hilton Avenue, officers were called to the area on reports of gunfire. A man told police he was shot by his girlfriend’s former boyfriend. Witnesses led police to a house in W. LaClede Ave., but the man inside would not come out. After about 60 minutes, he surrendered to police. The suspect identified himself at Bennie Robinson, II, but police later learned that his real name is Donte Maudlin. Maudlin now face an additional charge of providing false information. 

Monday, April 8

5:45 p.m. – Teamsters Drive, Jonnie Winslow, 31, was arrested on charges of drug possession. According to police, a bus driver attempted to drop off Winslow’s three young children at their stop on Clarencedale Avenue, but Winslow was not there. Police say they later found Winslow passed out inside a car at the district’s bus garage. Officers say Winslow admitted to using a “full dose” of methadone and they also found suspected meth on the seat where Winslow was sitting, the report stated. The children were turned over to a relative. 

Tuesday, April 9

2:33 P.M. – 100 block of Tod Lane, officers were called to the area on reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found a man lying on the ground near the front porch of a house with fatal gunshot wounds. Two other victims, bystanders who were injured in a motor vehicle accident at the scene, were taken to St. Elizabeth Hosptial. Several shell casings were found in the area. The Mahoning County Coroner is assisting in the investigation. 

6 p.m. – 500 block of Judson Ave., a woman told police that she got into an argument with her former boyfriend and that he held inside the house against her will, took her cell phone and fired a gun at her as she tried to crawl out of a window. The woman said she eventually convinced the man to let her leave and had a friend drive her to the hospital. The woman filed a police report two days later.
