YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Children helped fight water pollution in Youngstown on Friday, getting a green thumb in the process.

The children are summer campers for OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology‘s Summer Manufacturing Institute. As part of the camp, they took a field trip to ms consultants in downtown Youngstown to plant a rain garden outside.

MS Consultants partnered with the YWCA and the OhWOW! Summer Manufacturing Institute to put on Friday’s program. The three-week camp consists of a variety of programs, and this week’s theme was “Engineering Our Earth.”

Fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-graders all pitched in to plant, and they learned how a rain garden helps reduce pollution in lakes and rivers.

Courtney Boyle, an environmental project manager, explained how the rain garden works.

“This catches the rain and holds the rainwater… and also treats it. So, the pollutants are absorbed by the soil… and also by the plants,” she said.

Ms consultants is also working with other business owners, showing how they can plant rain gardens on their own properties.
