Macy’s, JCPenney expected to stay at Southern Park Mall; new golf center coming

All projects are expected to be completed and open on July 1, 2021

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – A mega fitness center, an indoor golf facility and a new restaurant with local flavor will soon be a part of the Southern Park Mall.

Those announcements, along with new leases for existing tenants, came Wednesday from the mall’s owner Washington Prime Group.

The Sears building at the Southern Park Mall is gone. The land where it once stood is ready for the DeBartolo Commons.

“Well, today was an exciting day,” said mall manager Brian Gabbert.

Gabbert was part of the announcement that Macy’s and PNC Bank have extended their leases and plan to renovate their spaces.

JCPenney intends to stay as well, but nothing was mentioned about extending a lease.

Planet Fitness is relocating its current Boardman gym to construct a new mega fitness center next to JCPenney’s.

Soon to be built in the DeBartolo Commons area will be “The Bunker” — an indoor golf facility — and a second location of Bogey’s Restaurant in Coitsville Township. The Bunker and Bogey’s are working together.

“I’ll tell you this, through COVID, everybody’s wondering what’s going to happen, who’s going to do what? We’ve never changed our scope, we’ve never backed down. Our time frame has changed but we have not changed our scope of work and we’re moving ahead full force with our plans,” Gabbert said.

“Yeah, The Bunker, it’s exciting,” said Jonah Karzmer, owner of The Bunker.

As one of the Youngstown area’s best golfers, Karzmer will be the man behind The Bunker, a combination of golf simulators and an instructional area. Included will be the Ben Curtis Golf Academy, run by four-time PGA Tour winner Ben Curtis.

“It just kind of all fell into place. The old Jillian’s space in the mall down here on the corner, we’ll have almost 38,000 square feet inside and then five or six thousand square feet outside,” Karzmer said.

The new Steel Valley Brew Works will sit next to The Bunker and Bogey’s. It will also overlook and connect to the Debartolo Commons. The brew venue will feature games like indoor bocce and pinball and also plans to bring in local food truck vendors.

The area where the DeBartolo Commons will go has all be cleared and leveled. Much of it will be open space planted with grass, with an amphitheater on one end.

It was supposed to have opened this fall but the new opening date is July 1, 2021.
