NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – Niles Police are looking for what they think is a group of teenagers who stole an American flag from a family’s front yard and burned it.
Matt Duncan found the flag charred.
“I noticed that it was charred, had some slices in it, and it was burned,” Duncan said about the flag that was once flying on a pole over his house.
“It’s disgraceful. I mean we were heartbroken,” Duncan said. “We bought this flag through a program through the rotary. They bring it out for all the major American holidays that we celebrate what the soldiers do for us.”
Duncan says it was the second time in two days that someone took the flag from his yard. He suspects it was a group of teenagers just acting out, so he filed a police report. Meanwhile, his wife Jamie posted this picture on Facebook.
“Everybody’s kind of disappointed in our kids, or whoever it is, that they would disgrace our flag. We feel we’re a good community and we raised our kids better than that,” Jamie said.
Niles Vietnam War Veteran Tom Karovic said, “Well, It upsets me tremendously.”
The Duncan’s eight-year-old son Connor, who said the pledge to the flag in front of his house every morning, was upset by what happened.
“He was very disappointed that somebody wold take it and disgrace it by burning it,” Jamie said.
“It’s very disrespectful and it’s a really childish act, and it’s something that shouldn’t happen,” Karovic mentioned.
