Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 18, at Lane Family Funeral Homes, 65 N. Broad Street, Canfield Chapel for Ruth E. Hammond, 93 of Canfield Place Assisted Living who died early Thursday morning, May 10, at her residence.
Ruth was born December 1, 1924 in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late William Earl and Mabel (Guest) Thomas and came to this area in June of 1936.
She graduated Valedictorian from Canfield High School in 1942 and went on to work for the Erie Railroad from 1943-1965. Ruth then worked for the Ohio Department of Transportation from 1965 until she retired in December 1991.
She was a former member of Canfield United Methodist Church and had volunteered to do income taxes for AARP. Ruth worked the election polls and enjoyed planning reunions for her class and also her husband’s graduation class and veteran’s group.
She had many talents including calligraphy, baking cakes and making candy.
Her husband, Donald Lee Hammond whom she married July 1, 1947, died October 26, 1996.
She leaves her son, W. Richard (Michele) Hammond of Canfield; a daughter, Bonita (John) Viele of Hubbard; a brother, Robert (Marie) Thomas of Canfield and a sister-in-law, Nancy Thomas of Florida. Ruth also leaves two grandchildren, Monique (Dan) Marks and Jeremy (fiancée , Kayla Haslett) Hammond; a great-granddaughter Ava and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and her husband, Ruth was preceded in death by her son, Robert Hammond; two brothers, William Thomas and Richard Thomas and a sister, Marion Adkins.
Friends may call on Thursday, May 17, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Lane Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel.
