YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (MyValleyTributes) – Roberta Jean Kirkland Gray, 64, of Youngstown, Ohio, departed this life Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at 2:00 a.m.at the Hospice House, following an extended illness.
She was born February 17, 1955 in Youngstown, Ohio, the daughter of Willie and Jean J. Bobo Kirkland, Jr.
Ms. Gray was a member of Abundant Harvest Church, where she was active with the Praise and Worship Team, Church Greeter, Soloist, Flag Ministry and Prison Ministry for Death Row Inmates and recorded a gospel CD “I Am Yours”.
She enjoyed puzzles, sewing, baking and sending cards of encouragement.
She graduated in 1973 from South High School and received her cosmetology license from Lewis and Weinberger Beauty School.
She married Johnnie Lee Gray October 29, 1983, he died July 15, 2004.
She leaves to mourn one son, Raymond (Rayshanda) German of Youngstown; one daughter, Ms. Monica Rae Kirkland of Youngstown; her mother, Mrs. Jean J. Bobo Kirkland White of Youngstown; one brother, Raymond (Jovaunda) Kirkland of Sacramento, California; three sisters, Mrs. Rita (Willie) Wilson of Youngstown, Ms. Rhonda Kirkland of Baltimore, Maryland and Ms. Rosalyn Kirkland of Youngstown; four grandchildren, Kamilah Thomas, Jamal German, Devin German and Akilah Thomas all of Youngstown; Shawn Thomas, who she thought of as a son; 12 stepchildren, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren she loved and a host of nephews, nieces, family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father; grandparents, Rev. Walter E. and Juanita Bobo Sr. and Willie and Bessie Kirkland; four uncles, Walter E. Bobo, Jr., William M. Bobo, Timothy J. Bobo and Robert L. Kirkland, who was the “special dad” and one nephew, Kipchoge N. Kirkland.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Abundant Harvest Church.
Calling hours will be held Friday, May 10, 2019 from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. at the Sterling-McCullough Williams Youngstown Funeral Chapel with burial to follow at Tod Homestead Cemetery.
A television tribute will air Thursday, May 9 at the following approximate times: 12:25 p.m. WKBN, 6:58 p.m. on MyYTV and 10:37 p.m. FOX plus two additional spots throughout the day.
