HERMITAGE, PA (MyValleyTributes) – A homegoing celebration will be held Thursday, April 18 at 11:00 a.m. at Ruth AME Zion Church in Sharon, Pennsylvania, for Mr. Robert Daniel Townsend, of Hermitage, Pennsylvania, who passed away at West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh on Thursday, April 11, 2019. He was 71.
Bobby was born July 13, 1947, in Sharon, Pennsylvania, a son of Robert Townsend, Jr. and Kathleen Allen Townsend.
He was employed for 27 years at the former Sharon Steel Corporation’s Farrell Plant, working many years in the scarfing yard. Following the closing of Sharon Steel, he worked as an at-risk advisor for the Farrell Area School District for 13 years.
Bobby was an avid NBA basketball fan. He always said there was a basketball game on 24/7 somewhere in the world. In his younger days, he coached many youth basketball and midget football teams. He was a member of the “Over-the-Hill” basketball team, playing in numerous 3-on-3 Gus Macker tournaments. Bobby will always be remembered for being the “photographer of the valley”, taking numerous candid pictures. His specialty was wedding photos and videos.
He was a Vietnam War veteran (First Battalion, 4th Infantry) from 1966 to his honorable discharge in 1968 as a SP4 (T), serving in Germany.
As a member of Ruth African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Sharon, Pennsylvania, he previously served as a trustee and prior to his recent illness served on the Usher Board. Bobby was also a dedicated Prince of Peace volunteer (with the volunteers of Ruth A.M.E. Zion Church serving meals at the local social services agency).
He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughters, Sonya K. Townsend of Sharon, Pennsylvania and Rolaunda C. Johnson (Lloyd) of New Castle, Pennsylvania; his sons, Robert Q. Townsend (fiancée, Tamie) of Charleroi, Pennsylvania and Richard D. Townsend (Nicole) of Phoenix, Arizona; his sister, Christine A. Townsend of Hermitage, Pennsylvania; his uncle, Willie James Townsend of S. Ozone Park, New York; his aunt, Mary A. Ridley of Brooklyn, New York; his stepmother, Dorothy Askerneese Townsend of Forest Hills, Pennsylvania; ten grandchildren, Brittany Townsend, Jasmine Townsend, Cherade Townsend, Shantel Townsend, Desmonde Jennings, Destinee Jennings, Daysha Jennings, Mykia Townsend-Strozier, Jourdan Townsend and Ashton Crooks; two stepgrandchildren, Dayisa Nunn and Deotis Nunn; 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Bobby was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Nelson C. Townsend; his companion, Betty Jones and a great-grandson, Noah-Divine Dungee.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. at Ruth AME Zion Church, Sharon, Pennsylvania on Thursday, April 18.
Interment will be in America’s Cemetery Hermitage, Pennsylvania.
