Richard McClelland Gates, 86, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at the Calcutta Healthcare Center with family by his side.
Richard was born December 19, 1932 in New Castle, Pennsylvania, son of the late Victor and Mildred McClelland Gates.
A longtime resident of New Waterford but previously resided in New Springfield, he was a graduate of Springfield High School. Richard attended Baldwin Wallace where he was in the marching band.
He then enlisted in the Army and served during the Korean War.
After discharge, he went on to work at Youngstown Sheet and Tube and later for Adamson’s Tank as a Welder/Fitter for a number of years prior to their closing.
He then went on to complete his degree and graduated with an associate degree from Kent State.
Richard most enjoyed his family and never missed an opportunity to watch his grandchildren’s activities.
He has been a lifelong active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in New Springfield and enjoyed singing in their choir.
Richard is survived by two sons, Richard A. (Debbie) Gates and James R. (Hollee) Gates both of New Waterford; two daughters, Linda E. (Eric) Conti of Hookstown, Pennsylvania and Anne M. Halas of New Waterford; two sisters-in-law, Susie Noel and Daralee (Wayne) Graham; as well as nine grandchildren, Andrew, Aricka, Alexis, Brandon, Nickolas, Ethan, Jared, Hope and Mara.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Margaret Anne (Norman) in 2003; brother, Russell Gates and a sister, Mary Adell Paes.
The family will receive friends Friday, January 11, 2019 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the Linsley-Royal Funeral Home in East Palestine.
A funeral service will follow visitation, Friday, January 11, at 6:00 p.m. with Pastor Erin Burns officiating.
A private Interment will be held at New Springfield Cemetery.
A television tribute will air Thursday, January 10 at the following approximate times: 12:25 p.m. WKBN, 6:58 p.m. on MyYTV and 10:37 p.m. FOX plus two additional spots throughout the day.
