Marlene (Planchak) Comunale, of Sharon, passed away at 5:20 a.m. on Sunday, March 31, 2019, in Nugent’s Convalescent Home in Hermitage. She was 82.
On September 16, 1936, Marlene was born in Sharon, a daughter to Mary Elizabeth (Skourn) and Leonard Planchak.
Marlene graduated from Sharon High School, class of 1954. Some years later she earned her B.F.A. from Youngstown State University, graduating cum laude in 1983.
She was a well-known, local self-employed artist who participated in many area art shows and exhibits and achieved a bounty of awards and honors for her body of work. Marlene was a board member of the former Valley Arts Guild in Sharon; as well as, a former chairperson for several Buhl Day Art Shows. Additionally, Marlene served several terms as a Democratic Committeewoman of Sharon, 3rd Ward, 1st District.
Her hobbies included dancing, roller skating, writing poetry and reading; as well as, spending time with her children, 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She is survived by three daughters, Heidi Orlick and her husband, David, of Henniker, New Hampshire, Lisa Zdral and her husband, John, of Yorba Linda, California and Sharon Comunale and her partner, Egret, of Grants Pass, Oregon.
Besides her parents, Marlene was preceded in death by her daughter, Gina LaCamera; her son, Richard Comunale and three sisters: Leona Dunn, Deb Appod and Rosemary “Babe” Burkhardt.
Calling hours will be held 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Friday, April 5 in John Flynn Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2630 E. State Street, Hermitage.
Funeral service will be 3:00 p.m. Friday, April 5 in the funeral home chapel with the Very Rev. Richard J. Allen officiating.
Burial will be in St. Rose Cemetery, with her son Richard.
A television tribute will air Thursday, April 4 at the following approximate times: 6:41 a.m. WYTV and 8:41 a.m. MyYTV and 9:58 a.m. on FOX plus two additional spots throughout the day.
