Leonard John Derico, Sr., age 81, of Warren, Ohio went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, January 8, 2019. He passed away at the Trumbull Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on September 19, 1937, in Buckhannon, West Virginia, the son of the late Joseph and Anna DeFrancesco Derico.
On December 28, 1957, he married Helen Brinkley, who survives. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Sandy Derico of Bridgeport, West Virginia; Len Derico, Jr. and wife, Nita, of Columbiana, Ohio and Joe Derico and wife, Olivia, of Cortland, Ohio. Also surviving are grandchildren, Amy Ashcraft, Kelly Bennett, Danny Ash, Adam Derico, Nick Derico and Christopher Kasabian and his great-grandchildren, Dakota, Danae, David, Silas, Grace, Mason and Logan. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Slaughter of Shinnston, West Virginia.
In addition to his parents, Leonard was preceded in death by his brothers, Guy, Bill, Raymond, Angelo and Lebro Derico and his sisters, Edna Coughlin and Theresa Henline.
Leonard (Len) worked 30 years for the Grinnell Corporation as a pipe fitter and welder and 15 years for Portage Transformer winding transformer coils. Len was a dedicated employee who always brought a positive attitude to work. He also played guitar for the Bob Dellimuiti Band on the weekends and painted houses to support his family.
Len enjoyed music and singing and used his gifts to serve God by playing the guitar and singing in the praise band at the Northeast Christian Church in Warren, Ohio. He also enjoyed fishing, golf; as well as watching baseball and football with his son, Joe.
Len’s family was very important to him. He was blessed with 61 years of marriage to Helen who were inseparable. When you saw one you usually saw the other. They enjoyed life, love and faith together through the many wonderful years God gave them. Len was always first to encourage others in their lives and pursuits. A pastor at heart, Len would call people who were sick or struggling to encourage them. All who knew Len will miss his smile and upbeat attitude.
Len was a born again Christian who enjoyed studying the Bible, worship and serving God. He set an example of humility and love for the Body of Christ and all who knew him. As promised by God Len can say with the Apostle Paul, ” have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day-and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8.
