FARRELL, PA (MyValleyTributes) – On the afternoon of Monday, April 15, 2019, Cecelia Macchia of Farrell passed away peacefully at the age of 96.
Born to Stephen and Julia Harrigal in Braddock, Pennsylvania, Cecelia and her 11 siblings knew a humble but happy home filled with music. Her father played the violin and accordion while Cecelia and her sisters harmonized to countless songs; the songs for which she will be remembered by generations of family and friends.
At the tender age of 22 Cecilia met Thomas Macchia, a handsome Navy sailor, on a train to Cleveland. Throughout their short 6-month courtship, they communicated devotedly with daily love letters and married on June 27, 1945 in St. Mary’s Church, Patuxent Naval Air Test Center, Maryland. During their 73 years of marriage they were blessed with five children and the opportunity to travel the world together.
Cecelia shared her time and talents freely, serving as a gym teacher and active PTO member for St. Ann school and volunteering as librarian for St. Anthony and Notre Dame schools. Cecelia acted as Treasurer for the Farrell America Legion Auxiliary for years and helped with their weekly Bingo. She prepared tasty pies, cookies, and breads for numerous fundraisers as a St. Anthony Parish “Bakerette” and her children and grandchildren craved her delicious wedding soup every holiday. An avid card player, Cecelia was a member of several card clubs and loved a good crossword puzzle. Into her 80’s she was a formidable bocce player in the American Legion and Italian Home leagues but her competitive streak was probably most apparent during rousing family games of “SPOONS”. A devout catholic, Cecelia collected over 275 nativity sets and prayed the rosary every night, asking God for His blessing on countless family members, neighbors, friends and acquaintances. Many of those people also received a card from her on their birthday or a special occasion with a kind word and “XOXOXO” at the bottom. With a lovely voice, Cecelia delighted in sharing the music she learned from her father with her own children and grandchildren. She loved to accompany her husband as he played on the family organ and rarely missed a summer concert in Buhl Park.
Cecilia is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas and 11 siblings.
She is survived by her five children, Thomas Macchia, Jr., Patricia Kaiser, Robert (Mona) Macchia, Richard Macchia and Jane (Paul) Gustas; as well as, eight grandchildren, John (Kelly) Kaiser, Cristy (Richard) French, Mathew (Holly) Macchia, Dina (Matt) Fabian, Kellie Gustas, Stacia Macchia, Katie Gustas and McKenzie Gustas and five great-grandchildren, Alexa and Antonio Macchia, Tenley and Sawyer Fabian and Alexander French.
Rest in Peace Mammy. Your songs and kind spirit will live on forever in our hearts. We Love You.
A public viewing will be held on Monday, April 22, 2019 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. at St. Anthony of Padua in Sharon, Pennsylvaia with a Mass of Christian Burial immediately to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests consideration for donations to Cecelia’s cherished FH Buhl Farm Park [buhlfarmpark.com] or St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Sharon, Pennsylvania.
